Suggestions on partitioning my HDD for ubuntu
I'm using ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows for over a year now and want to
install ubuntu 13.04
This time i want to dedicate all my hard drive to ubuntu, my HDD
partitions look like this now:
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 298.1G 0 disk
„¥„Ÿsda1 8:1 0 13.1G 0 part
„¥„Ÿsda2 8:2 0 100M 0 part
„¥„Ÿsda3 8:3 0 56.9G 0 part
„¥„Ÿsda4 8:4 0 1K 0 part
„¥„Ÿsda5 8:5 0 190G 0 part /media/Stuff
„¥„Ÿsda6 8:6 0 35.3G 0 part /
„¤„Ÿsda7 8:7 0 2.7G 0 part [SWAP]
sr0 11:0 1 1024M 0 rom
I planning to give root partition 15 GB, 2.7 GB for SWAP and the rest for
/home
the reason that i'm seperating /home is that if i wanted to upgrade ubuntu
in future, only / would be formatted and all my files whould be safe in
installing (fresh copy of ubuntu) process.
what do you think would be optimal ? I use ubuntu for work (Programming,
Android)
In my current installation softwares that are heavy in size (like Android
SDK, Eclipse, Netbeans...) are placed in my home partition and that's
because i thought 15 GB for / whould be enough.
So, do i need to seperate /home partition ? And is it better to put my
softwares inside / partition (for example, in /opt/ or in /home (I mean
softwares like Eclipse or Android SDK that are just extracted somewhere).
